My Plurality
[ A solo exhibition painted in public ]

[Dates] January 20 – February 27, 2022

As a child, my father often took me to the public bathhouse. Whenever I spotted someone whose whole body was covered in tattoos, I would rush over and study them up close. Looking back, my father still laughs about how nervous it always made him.
From mid-January 2022, for about a month, the painter Seiji Tokushige will create several paintings in public inside the café at BUoY.
The subject is the face. Every face is based on a "MetaHuman" — a person generated entirely by computer graphics who does not exist. By giving each face tattoos that stand for its own backstory, desires and resolve, the work turns a person who does not exist into an expression in which will and multiple selves can be felt.
The artist focuses on the "avatar", which is fast becoming a tool of contemporary life, and sets out to question it.

Quoted from "Persona" by Nobuko Nakano
~ Would it be going too far to say that my persona (the outward side of the self that appears when I face others) is a role I am playing? What you think of as me is not me. You are only seeing that side of me for the time being.
I do not exist. This is not a sad thing. There is no need to lament being a transparent presence. Precisely because of it, I can respond to the changes to come. The time of change has already arrived. ~
