The story of technique
and testing behind a single work
Behind the finished work.
A record of how one painting comes to hold public value.
This page is built so that the further down you go, the closer you come to the private beginning,
and the further up, the closer to completion as a work.

The stage where everything tested along the way is gathered onto one surface. Technique honed over years is brought to bear, layers of material are built up, details are refined. Only here does private enquiry turn into a work — a form opened to the world. Each piece shown on this site lies beyond this stage.

The finishing stage. The fruits of testing are gathered onto a single work.
What has begun to take form is set aside, observed after time has passed, and judged without mercy. Under the light, from a different distance, on a different day. It is not unusual for something to be sent back to prototype at this stage. Testing exists not only to move forward, but also to turn back.

Time for observation. Many trials are sent back from here.
Material and thought, once taken apart and distilled, are assembled once more. The work of further embodiment — the making of a prototype. It is the stage at which an idea on paper first gains the weight of matter, and the front line of testing, where material and technique are tried against each other.

Making a prototype. The idea begins to gain the weight of matter.
What has been gathered is taken apart, the excess pared away, until only the core remains — the dismantling and distilling of information. Not a question of what should be painted, but of redefining why. Many ideas are dropped here and quietly end. Even so, only what survives goes on.

Dismantling and distilling. Most ideas end here.
Rather than keeping it in the head, the hand moves first. Drawing, test passages of paint, the act of putting something into form. Whether it will succeed is not yet asked. Guided only by what becomes visible once it is put out into the world, the idea begins to find its outline.

Output as embodiment. Success or failure is not yet the question.

Drawing. An outline that appears only through the moving hand.
Every single work begins from some small presence within daily life. An idea, something learned, a sketch of a work to come. The notes and records set down here are still private seeds, meant for no one's eyes. And yet the work at the very top of this page grew, without exception, from here.

Daily notes. Seeds still meant for no one's eyes.

Records of learning and inspiration. Everything begins here.
Beyond this story lies a single work.
The techniques tested here come to fruition as finished works.
